Our Story
Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church organized September 1, 1819. When the church first organized, it is believed they met in the homes of members during the winter months and a building during the summer months for the first 18 years of the church existence. They met the second Saturday of each month.
In 1839 the first “meeting House” was built and completed in 1841. The Church was known as “Mt. Vernon Church of United Baptists.” In 1916 we became Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. This happened when we joined with the Association 1916. On September 6-7, 1916 the Russell County Association of Missionary Baptists met in its first session at Mt Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. The meeting was called to order by Rev. J. R. Grider, temporary Moderator and Rev. J. P. Hamilton led in prayer. Rev. J. S. Wade preached the first introductory sermon from Acts 2:42, the theme being, “Why I Am a Baptist.” Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist Church has been an active participant of the Baptist Association since that date.
